Blaxland – Timber Boardwalk & Backyard Landscaping
Blaxland Timber Boardwalk & Backyard Landscaping
Our latest Blaxland landscaping project has transformed an existing backyard into a practical, welcoming outdoor space that works beautifully with the home, established garden and surrounding bushland. After previously completing the front yard for these clients, the Fresh Perspective Landscapes team was invited back to give the backyard a complete makeover.
The project focused on improving access, creating defined garden areas and making better use of the existing backyard, while retaining a natural connection with the surrounding landscape.
The focal feature is the new Timber Boardwalk across the backyard and extending around to the side of the house, linking up seamlessly with a concrete path providing an inviting entrance from the front of the house into the backyard. Constructed from timber decking, the boardwalk incorporates changes in level with timber steps, creating a seamless transition between the different areas of the garden.
Timber Boardwalk, Steps & Garden Access
The new side access path has completely improved the movement between the front and rear of the property. The Timber Boardwalk follows the natural layout of the space at the rear of the house, with timber steps and decking creating a warm, cohesive pathway.
Built-in lighting has been incorporated into the boardwalk and steps, adding ambient night lighting while also improving visibility and safety. The timber’s natural appearance works particularly well alongside the established garden, lawn and surrounding bushland.
The boardwalk also provides a practical connection between the house, garden and entertaining areas without dominating the landscape.
Retaining, Garden Beds & Bluestone Stepping-Stone Pathway
New retaining structures and raised garden beds help manage the changing levels and define the edges of the boardwalk while creating attractive planting areas throughout the backyard. The clean lines and structure of the timber and retaining work contrast nicely with the softer planting and existing vegetation.
A curved pathway with natural bluestone steppers softens the area as it leads through the lawn towards the fire pit area. The organically shaped stones create a relaxed garden path that complements the timber boardwalk and provides a natural transition between the different outdoor zones.
The existing lawn was also tidied up, garden beds planted and mulched paths edged with pebbles bringing the whole backyard together.
The finished result is a functional backyard landscape with improved side access, a feature timber boardwalk, integrated garden beds, natural stone pathways and subtle outdoor lighting, creating a space that feels practical, connected and at home within its beautiful bushland setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of installing a timber boardwalk in a garden?
A timber boardwalk can provide a practical way to navigate a garden, particularly where there are changes in levels, uneven ground or difficult access areas. It can also become an attractive landscape feature, adding warmth and natural texture to the garden. Depending on the design, a timber boardwalk can incorporate stairs, handrails, lighting and connections to other pathways or outdoor living areas.
How much does a timber boardwalk cost?
The cost of a timber boardwalk depends on factors including its length and width, the type of timber used, site conditions, ground preparation, structural requirements and whether stairs, lighting or other landscaping features are included. Boardwalks on sloping or uneven sites may require additional structural work. A site assessment and detailed landscaping design are usually required to provide an accurate quotation.
What is the best material for a garden pathway?
The best pathway material depends on the landscape design, how the pathway will be used, the site conditions and the desired appearance. Popular options include concrete, natural stone, pavers, gravel, pebbles and timber. Natural materials such as bluestone, timber and decorative pebbles can create a softer appearance that complements established gardens, while concrete and pavers can provide a more structured and durable pathway.
How can landscaping improve access around a sloping or uneven backyard?
Good landscape design can make difficult or uneven areas much easier to navigate by incorporating features such as retaining walls, garden steps, boardwalks, pathways and levelled garden areas. The appropriate solution depends on the site’s slope, drainage, existing structures and how the space will be used. Combining different pathway and access materials can also create a practical transition between different levels and areas of the garden.
How can retaining walls and garden beds improve a backyard landscape?
Retaining walls can help manage changes in ground level while creating more usable areas within a garden. They can also provide structure and definition around lawns, pathways, entertaining areas and garden beds. Incorporating planting areas alongside retaining walls can soften hard landscaping and help integrate structures such as pathways, steps and boardwalks into the surrounding landscape.
