Sandstone Firepit and Outdoor Entertaining Area in Little Hartley
Sandstone Firepit and Outdoor Entertaining Area in Little Hartley
This beautiful Little Hartley landscaping project was designed to create a functional and inviting outdoor living space that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. At the heart of the design is a stunning sandstone firepit, providing the perfect gathering place to relax and enjoy the cooler mountain evenings.
The custom-built sandstone firepit area was designed as a standout feature, surrounded by decorative granite pathways that connect the various outdoor spaces throughout the property. With generous room for seating and entertaining, this firepit zone creates a warm and welcoming focal point within the landscape.
Sandstone Firepit Design with Natural Stone Landscaping
The sandstone firepit was integrated into the existing landscape using natural materials that complement the surrounding bushland setting.
To further soften the landscape, planting was completed throughout the garden using carefully selected, hardy liriope, lavender, westringia and callistemon. Fresh mulch, automated irrigation systems and garden lighting were also installed to improve the long-term health, functionality and appearance of the garden.
Striking corten steel screens and a feature corten planter add texture and warmth, creating year-round visual interest while complementing the earthy tones of the sandstone and surrounding vegetation.
Sandstone Firepit, Ekodeck and Recycled Railway Sleeper Features
The upper section of the property features a low-maintenance Ekodeck outdoor entertaining area with views across the surrounding trees. Hardwood handrails with stainless steel wire balustrading provide safety while maintaining the open outlook, and aluminium sheeting was installed beneath the deck to deliver a clean and durable finish.
A raised garden bed was constructed between the deck and stairway, helping to define the space and introduce additional greenery. Below the deck, a custom-built recycled railway sleeper bench seat wraps around the structure, providing practical seating and adding character to the design.
Recycled railway sleepers were also used to construct the garden steps, creating a cohesive and sustainable landscaping solution that perfectly suits the natural Blue Mountains environment.
This project showcases how thoughtful landscape design, quality materials and expert craftsmanship can transform an outdoor space into a functional retreat centred around a stunning sandstone firepit and outdoor entertaining area.

Frequently Asked Questions – Sandstone Firepits, Ekodeck and Recycled Railway Sleepers
Is sandstone a good material for an outdoor firepit?
Yes, sandstone is a popular choice for outdoor firepit construction because it is durable, naturally attractive and blends beautifully into Australian landscapes. A sandstone firepit creates a timeless focal point for outdoor entertaining areas and can withstand the varying weather conditions experienced throughout the Blue Mountains and surrounding regions.
How much space do I need for a sandstone firepit area?
The ideal size of a sandstone firepit area depends on how many people you plan to accommodate. Most designs should allow enough room for seating, pathways and safe clearance around the fire.
How much does a sandstone firepit cost in Australia?
The cost of a sandstone firepit in Australia varies depending on the size, design, site access, excavation requirements and the surrounding landscaping features included. A simple sandstone firepit area may be relatively affordable, while larger custom-designed firepit zones that incorporate seating, pathways, retaining walls, lighting and planting will require a greater investment. The best way to determine the cost is to obtain a customised landscaping quote based on your property, desired design and intended use of the space.
Are recycled railway sleepers suitable for landscaping projects?
Recycled railway sleepers are an excellent choice for landscaping because they are strong, long-lasting and full of character. They can be used for garden steps, retaining walls, bench seating and garden edging. Reclaimed railway sleepers are also a sustainable landscaping solution that helps reduce waste while creating a rustic, natural appearance.
What are the benefits of installing an Ekodeck instead of a timber deck?
Ekodeck composite decking offers the appearance of timber without the high maintenance requirements. Unlike traditional timber decking, Ekodeck does not require regular staining, oiling or painting and is resistant to rot, splintering and termite damage. It is an ideal low-maintenance decking solution for outdoor entertaining areas and elevated viewing platforms.
